The community lost a great man Sept. 5, when Howard Eskuri passed away. He was the Kalevala Township clerk, a member of the Kettle River American Legion and the deacon of the Leonard Cemetery. He will be missed by many friends and relatives. Funeral services are Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kettle River. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Leonard Cemetery in Kettle River and mailed to the Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, PO Box 338, Moose Lake MN 55767. When leaving a card for the family at a...

School has started, so please take extra time for travel and stop for all school buses. We want to keep all the children safe while they travel to and from school. When the bus is stopped, wait until the children have safely crossed the road and the bus has started again before moving. Come to the next Kettle River city council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the council room. There will be a Ma & Pa Kettle Days planning meeting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Kettle River senior center. We will be working on upcoming events and discus...

I would like to thank all the volunteers who made the Ma & Pa Kettle Days happen again this year. Covid played a part in making us start over from scratch and we are really trying to keep this event going. I also want to thank all the people who attended. I heard many people liked the new way we did the standstill parade. We nearly ran out of pies at the pie social and many people enjoyed the old-fashioned-style bingo with great prizes. There will be a Ma & Pa Kettle Days meeting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Kettle River Senior Center to...

I am looking forward to attending the Finnish luncheon Tuesday, Sept. 20, at noon at the Kettle River senior center and seeing what we will have then — maybe another reading on the area’s history. This is always a great time to visit with friends we see only once a month. The last Finnish luncheon for the season will be Oct. 18. When I was young, my next-door neighbor had an ice box. The iceman would bring her blocks of ice every day. During the hot summer days, all the neighborhood kids would anxiously wait for him to stop in front of our hou...

Thank you to the members of the city council, city employees, fire department and police and anyone else who worked so hard putting together the National Night Out event in Kettle River. About 100 people attended, and roughly 20 children got rides in the firetruck. An excellent meal was also provided in addition to gifts for the children. Fortunately, the rain held off until nearly everyone had left. Thanks, too, to the crew that spent time in the hot sun to get the crosswalks painted on Highway 73 at the post office crossing and also at the...

I wish more people would attend the city council meetings to hear about events affecting our city, the problems that are continuing, and the ripple effect on all the residents. Come to the next Kettle River city council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 at the council room for an update on what is happening with the water tower project and when it will be finished. This is the time to register for the November election. There are several council positions that are up for election. It is important to get members onto the city council who want...

I am really looking forward to National Night Out in Kettle River, scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 at the Kettle River senior center. This is a chance to visit with friends and neighbors while enjoying hamburgers and hot dogs. I think there will be firetruck rides for the kids and maybe the mounted police will also be there. Have you noticed that there is equipment at the water tower? Come to the next Kettle River city council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 in the council room for an update on what is happening with this project and...

I wonder how fast the driver of a flatbed truck was going last Friday morning to bury his truck in the mud across from North Road on County Road 6. He had to be going very fast to have gone past the stop sign and end up quite a way from the pavement in the mud. There were two huge vehicles trying to get him out of the swamp. When I came back past the area later in the day, it looked like a small pond where the truck had been buried. I hope everyone will be able to attend the Finnish Luncheon at noon Tuesday, July 19 at the Kettle River senior...

The Ma & Pa Kettle Days committee met Wednesday, June 21 to plan for this year’s Ma & Pa Kettle Days, which will be held Aug. 13. Some activities include a pie social at the senior center 12-2 p.m. and bingo at the Veterans Building 1-4 p.m. Look for Tony Tracy and friends to perform at the Tower Tap 7 p.m. to midnight. We are still trying to confirm other events and will need volunteers to help. If you are willing to lend a hand this year, contact Dan Reed at 218-273-6103 or Marcia Sarvela at 218-273-4045, or send a note to Ma & Pa Kettle D...

The Ma & Pa Kettle Days committee met May 25 to plan for this year’s event, planned for Saturday, Aug. 13. Look for more information on what will be happening. Plan to attend the next city council meeting at 7 p.m. June 14 so you know what is happening. We need everyone to attend these meetings so they can understand why we have such legal fees that we don’t have the funds for and other needs such as filling in potholes. With road construction starting and a detour of Minnesota Highway 73, it may be a problem for some of the Cromwell peo... Full story
