  • 'This office wants to be in total compliance'

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Jan 11, 2019

The Carlton County attorney's office continues to dig into past criminal cases involving former Cloquet police officer Scott Beckman. Carlton County attorney Lauri Ketola said her office is planning to contract with an attorney who specializes in issues related to Brady-Giglio. Brady and Giglio refer to two different U.S. Supreme Court cases that require disclosures by prosecuting attorneys of any "exculpatory" material - which could exonerate a defendant of guilt - specifically including...

  • Fond du Lac Band appeals Minntac Permit

    Jan 11, 2019

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa filed an appeal with the Minnesota Court of Appeals last week, asking the court to reject the Minntac national pollution discharge and disposal system permit as drafted and to require the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to enforce all state water standards. Band representatives called the MPCA permit “nearly toothless” in the filing. In a statement issued Tuesday, the band noted that Minntac’s unlined, 12-square-mile tailings basin in Mountain Iron has long been acknowledged by owner U.S. Steel...

  • Wright-Cromwell News

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jan 11, 2019

The new year has brought a severe water problem at our home. First of all, the power went out for several hours in the cold weather on Jan. 2, so I think our waterlines and/or the pump froze. As I write this, we have been without water for several days in the house. I’m hoping that by the time you read this, it is fixed, but we have had to be pretty creative in how we use the bathroom, wash dishes, or clean ourselves up, etc. It sure helps that we have a lot of snow on the ground, as it came i...

  • Awaken your taste buds at Food for Thought

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Jan 11, 2019

The annual Food for Thought event is aptly named, as proceeds from ticket sales for the foodie fun fest go toward supporting student academic scholarships. Organized by the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Foundation, this year’s event will feature signature food and beverage specialties from 20 different local vendors, plus a “wall of wine,” silent auction and raffles galore. Food for Thought is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 17, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. “It’s fun to see so many people wa...

  • Great River Energy to pay less, taxpayers to pay more

    Dan Reed, Pine Knot News|Jan 11, 2019

Another Minnesota tax court settlement has been finalized, and county residents will pay higher future taxes as a result. According to Carlton County auditor Paul Gassert, Great Rivers Energy utility will now be assessed less for its line that crosses Western Carlton County north and south — affecting the townships of Split Rock, Automba, Lakeview, Eagle, Red Clover and Beseman. Gassert explained that the recently passed 2019 budget for Carlton County will not change as a result of the settlement; rather, the 1.5 percent impact will be borne by...

  • State releases reports on air quality and greenhouse gas emissions

    MN Pollution Control Agency|Jan 11, 2019

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency released two biennial reports that describe the state of Minnesota’s air quality and progress toward meeting the state’s statutory goals on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the MPCA biennial report, “The Air We Breathe: The State of Minnesota’s Air Quality, 2019,” Minnesota’s air quality is good overall, but it is not the same in all parts of the state and doesn’t affect all Minnesotans equally. Statewide, the air meets all federal standards and nearly all health benchmarks. Overall pollu...

  • LETTERS to the editor

    Jan 11, 2019

Stu Lourey will bring knowledge and energy to Minn. Senate To the editor: Recently, I’ve been reminded of the saying that “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness,” or, it’s better to take action than to complain. Many of us have been complaining a lot about the way the Republicans have worked to block many progressive initiatives. We now have a unique opportunity to take action at the polls. Because Sen. Tony Lourey was appointed to head Minnesota Human Services, his Senate seat is now open. It’s crucial we elect a great can...

  • Lead, leaders, lead

    Pete Radosevich, Harrys Gang|Jan 11, 2019

Standoffs are a terrible way to govern. The reason we have so many people in the legislative branches is to allow diversity of opinion. The more people we have, the more we need to compromise. So, why is there no compromise in the federal government? Instead of looking for solutions, we’re all arguing that we must “Save Our Country From Terrorists and if you are opposed to a wall you must Hate America And Should Leave. Or if you build a Wall, You Hate Anyone Who Looks Different Than You.” Every...

  • Good books, new and vintage

    Ann Markusen, Community Columnist|Jan 11, 2019

Starting this week, the Cloquet Public Library is offering its Winter Reading Program to encourage people of all ages to read. Librarians have been asking area leaders to recommend five books for their “Leaders are Readers” promotion on Facebook. As a Pine Knot Board member, I am contributing my five choices, and I’m adding in here my husband’s current reading as well! The books I’m recommending span the genres. Some are vintage and some quite recent. I’m currently reading and loving Mich...

  • Train Squatting

Parnell Thill, Notes from the Small Pond|Jan 11, 2019

There’s no freedom like stolen freedom. Just ask Henri Charriere (“Papillon”). Or the dude from “Shawshank Redemption.” Talk to anyone who’s spent time in county jail. At the risk of tripping over the obvious: The world on the outside is different than the world from within. Of course, the world itself doesn’t give a damn one way or the other who’s In and who’s Out, who’s Free or Imprisoned and doesn’t alter itself in service of either. The distinction is among the imprisoned and the free. The d...

  • OUR VIEW: Why didn't we all know sooner?

    Jan 11, 2019

We’re pleased Governor Tim Walz picked our state senator, Sen. Tony Lourey, to head Human Services. Lourey, who came into politics with no political experience except that which rubbed off from his mother’s political legacy, proved himself as a valuable resource in the Legislature, representing the Carlton and Pine Counties area, as well as being a thorough voice in health care policy. So we need to elect a new State Senator, and quickly — because the Legislature convened Tuesday, Jan. 8, we won’t have a voice in the Minnesota Senate until t...

  • Lourey appointment sparks special election

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Jan 11, 2019

News last week that Minnesota Senator Tony Lourey was leaving his District 11 seat to become commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Services sparked a fast and furious race for his senate seat. Additionally, the accelerated timeline of the special election has also created challenges for everyone from the candidates themselves to political parties and county officials tasked with running the election. “These elections will be conducted in the same manner as we did last fall for the A...

  • Nelson's third straight hat trick propels Lumberjacks' big win

Dwight Cadwell, Pine Knot News Sports|Jan 11, 2019

Junior forward Taylor Nelson scored her third straight hat trick Tuesday night as the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks defeated the Superior Spartans 7-0 in a Lake Superior Conference matchup at Northwoods Credit Union Arena. The Lumberjacks have been rolling offensively since the team resumed its schedule following the holiday break, winning seven straight games. CEC has outscored its opponents 17-2 in the last three contests and improved to 13-3 on the season. "Overall, we are happy with the...

  • Lumberjacks topple Marshall in close game

Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot News Sports|Jan 11, 2019

After outshooting the Marshall Hilltoppers 28-14 through two periods, you would have been hard-pressed to find anyone who thought the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team would be in a dead-even tie at 1-1. The 'Toppers woke up early in the third period and eventually grabbed a lead, but the resilience of the Lumberjacks was rewarded as CEC scored back-to-back late goals to come away with a 3-2 win Tuesday night in Duluth. The only goal of the first period was scored by Marshall's Carter...

  • Second-half surge keeps Eskomos rolling

Dwight Cadwell, Pine Knot News Sports|Jan 11, 2019

In a contest between two high-scoring teams raining down three-point shots, fans were treated to a truly traditional Polar League rivalry Friday night in Esko. The Eskomos broke a halftime tie and outscored the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels 47-32 in the second half to pick up a huge Polar Conference victory with a 80-65 win. The two teams entering the game Friday night averaged a combined 142 points per game and finished as expected with a combined 145 points. Esko - fresh off its seventh...

  • Rodd's ramblings

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 11, 2019

How times have changed! The other day I attended a sports event and happened to spend much of the time talking to a couple of friends in the crowd. I use the term “crowd” loosely because it was more a small smattering of people than a crowd. One person I visited with remarked on how sad it is to go to high school games when the crowds are so small that it seems the only ones in the stands are moms, dads and other relatives of the kids on the court, ice, or whatever the venue may be. I wal...

  • Let the compass be your guide

Bret Baker, Pine Knot News Outdoors|Jan 11, 2019

Take one of those math compasses we all enjoyed so much in school and center its unnecessarily sharp point on a map of downtown Cloquet. Stretch out its metallic arm and locate someplace, anyplace, 175 miles away. From there draw a perfect circle. This is my home range. This is where I live, work, hunt, and fish. If you plopped that same compass down anywhere else in the United States, you may find better hunting ground, but you would be hard-pressed to find the quality of outdoor opportunities...

  • Sharing the science of snow

    Glen Sorenson, Look at that|Jan 11, 2019

Happy new year to you all. I was very happy to see the snow we received last week because I love solid water, and all the things we can do with it. Sliding with my grandkids, riding a snowmobile, skiing at Mont du Lac, jumping and skiing at Pine Valley, fishing on a frozen lake, skating across a pond or a rink, or just looking at it, are all some of the reasons why I really do enjoy winter. In some of our past adventures we traveled in time or became really small. This column is about...

  • Skiers fly across icy snow at CEC Invitational

Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News Sports|Jan 11, 2019

Sleet falling on top of snow two days before the Lumberjacks invitational ski meet made for a fast race Tuesday. In fact, Cloquet senior Aidan Ripp may have set a record for the fastest 5.5K ever at Pine Valley, finishing the loop in 13:22.6, a full minute and 15 seconds ahead of the next competitor, Sam Stertz of Grand Rapids. The typically modest Ripp said he was fortunate Tuesday. "I got pretty lucky, because I didn't run into anybody at any bad times," he said. "I've definitely had races...

  • City may take over hockey arenas

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Jan 11, 2019

This is the cold, hard truth - changes are coming to Cloquet's Northwoods Credit Union Arena and the neighboring Pine Valley hockey arena, no matter what. The Cloquet ice hockey arenas are looking at a future that includes renovations to the tune of close to $3 million, City Administrator Aaron Reeves told the new Cloquet City Council at its first work session meeting Jan. 3. At the same meeting, he recommended the council consider taking over ownership of the arena from the Cloquet Area Hockey...

  • Education leads to change, and change leads to education

    Kim Samuelson, SWCD News|Jan 11, 2019

Many of us like to keep our lives on an even keel without too much rocking the boat. However, new ideas, new facts and new treatments all lead to new ways of doing things, to change, to rocking the boat. When faced with changing the way they have always lived, some people kick and scream and fight against changing. Others will change, but only after great and prolonged consideration and under much duress and in distress. But there are also those who, after reasonable research, see the...
