  • FinnFest tour to highlight Carlton County

    Jana Peterson|Jul 28, 2023

There was a time when a person could hear a church service in Finnish in Cloquet, live in the "Finntown" neighborhood and join one of several cooperatives started here by Finnish immigrants. Many descendents of those immigrants still live here. Some are easily identified by their blue eyes and blond hair, or their names - Riihiluoma, Juntunen, Ikola and Soukkala, among others - while others may be identified by their speech patterns or habits, such as taking a sauna (pronounced SOW-na if you're...

  • Scanlon dam gets a facelift

    Brady Slater|Jul 28, 2023

Crossing the St. Louis River on Minnesota Highway 61 in Scanlon offers a glimpse of a construction crane and a handful of workers crawling over one of the neighborhood dams. Even in the rain, the marine contractors from J.F. Brennan can be seen wearing yellow slickers. They've been working on a $3 million Minnesota Power project since May. It's aimed at replacing seven of eight gates on what is the east channel dam, built 100 years ago. "Hydro dams are long-lasting, forever assets," said Nora...

Laci Marie Silgjord worked as a police officer and later a K-9 partner for the city of Cloquet from 2015 to 2022. She met Joan Arney (now deceased) in May 2020 after the Cloquet resident called police about...

  • National Night Out is Tuesday for everyone

    Jana Peterson|Jul 28, 2023

National Night Out began nearly 40 years ago with the idea that the best way to build a safer community is to know your neighbors and your surroundings. A network of neighborhood watch groups and other crime prevention efforts along with law enforcement agencies threw block parties, cookouts, festivals and other events to bring people together with public safety officials, in their own neighborhoods or the larger community. It just keeps growing, reaching “millions of neighbors across t...

Walker Orenstein MinnPost.org Talon Metals has submitted its plan for an underground nickel and copper mine in Aitkin County to Minnesota regulators, launching the environmental review of a project that could become a domestic source of metals for electric vehicles but which has also drawn skepticism from the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. • Federal bill would boost news, business

    Jul 28, 2023

It’s no secret that recent years have been tough on small businesses and on newspapers. A bipartisan bill, the Community News & Small Business Support Act, that has been introduced in Congress would offer relief to both newspapers and local businesses. For too many newspapers, help can’t come soon enough. Economic challenges have resulted in too many communities seeing their local newspapers being forced to lay off staff, cut back on publication days or — worse yet — close. On average, two newspapers are closing each week. That hurts local b...

  • Knot Pining: Festivals hold traditions

    Mike Creger|Jul 28, 2023

My hometown festival takes place this weekend. And I won’t be attending. Southern Minnesota, many of us know, is simply too hot this time of year for us northerners. Instead, I’ll likely poke around that big air conditioner called Lake Superior and maybe take in some FinnFest events; its cultural-specific air might make me feel a bit like I’m at the old hometown shindig. Montgomery is the home of Kolacky Days, a celebration of all things Czech that’s been taking place since 1929. Town festivals are a huge thing in southern Minnesota, and much o...

  • Ad Libbing: Will West End still get the drift?

    Ivan Hohnstadt|Jul 28, 2023

I was working a bit late on a Friday night and heard the familiar squeal of tires "drifting" at the intersection of Avenue B and Vine Street in Cloquet. The rumbling of loud exhaust systems and engines revving continued. As I went out to my van to head home, I noticed a "stage" in the VFW parking lot, heard music, saw lots of cars and people milling about. I hadn't seen that much activity in the West End since the West End Flourish celebration last September. I was curious. The parking lot...
