  • Skaters gonna skate

    Caleb Swanson|Aug 2, 2019

Newish park in Cloquet hosts first big event Skinned knees and bruised shins were a fate no one escaped as the Cloquet skatepark was transformed into a chaotic gauntlet of scooters, bikes, skateboards, and flying bodies Friday, thanks to a visit from Golden Valley's 3rd Lair Skatepark and Skateshop - which hosted a skateboarding demonstration, clinics and contests for local kids. While the event came 10 months after the $420,000 skatepark opened in Cloquet, it felt a little bit like an opening...

  • Hands-free is now law

    Jana Peterson|Aug 2, 2019

When Minnesota governor Tim Walz signed the “hands-free while driving” law April 12, it meant Minnesota joined 17 states in requiring drivers to have their cellphones in hands-free mode while driving vehicles. It also gave people months to prepare for the day that they wouldn’t legally be able to hold their phones in the car. But now it’s showtime — the new law went into effect Aug. 1. Under the new law, drivers can use their device in hands-free or voice-activated mode only. That means manually...

Woolson moved to Duluth in 1905 and remained active in the GAR for decades. He...

  • Celebrate Wrenshall and Brickyard Days on Saturday

    Jana Peterson|Aug 2, 2019

It's been a while since the Habhegger Brick Company was a thriving business in the Wrenshall area, and even longer since Frederick Jacob Habhegger and his family of nine children bought 160 acres of land where Wrenshall is now located. At its peak, the brickyard produced approximately 4 million bricks per year and employed 35 men, according to the city's website. The brickyard closed in 1954 but it is remembered in the buildings around town - including the First Presbyterian Church and the Brick...

  • Meet the Carlton Wrenshall Raptors

    Jana Peterson|Aug 2, 2019

Students from the new combined Carlton Wrenshall football team and cheer squad unveiled their new mascot and colors during the Carlton Daze parade on Sunday. They are the Carlton Wrenshall Raptors - think velociraptor, not birds of prey - and the colors are bright Wrenshall orange and Carlton blue. They plan to do the same thing during the Wrenshall Brickyard Days parade on Saturday, according to Wrenshall superintendent Kim Belcastro. She explained that a committee made up of students from...

  • Family mystery solved with diploma

    Mike Creger|Aug 2, 2019

The picture always gnawed at Lynn Shaw. There she is, in 1958, posing with her brother and father next to their typical suburban Minneapolis home. The landscape is bare. Don Siiter is towering over his children. And he is wearing a graduation gown. "I was always bothered by a picture of me at 4 years old with my dad," Shaw wrote in an email to the Pine Knot News. Attached was the picture. "He said he did not have enough credits to graduate." So why the gown? Lynn, who is an educator with a docto...

  • School sports starting up again, practices begin Aug. 12

    Pine Knot News|Aug 2, 2019

If school feels like the far distant future, think again. Cloquet activities director Paul Riess wants to remind parents that fall activities officially start Monday, Aug. 12. Fall activities include cross-country running, girls tennis, girls swimming and diving, boys and girls soccer, football and volleyball. Although Aug. 12 is the first date coaches can conduct practices or tryouts, most of the teams are already holding captain’s practices, which are organized and run by the various team captains rather than the coaches. For families new t...

  • Cloquet administrator is leaving

    Jana Peterson|Aug 2, 2019

After just under two years on the job in Cloquet, city administrator Aaron Reeves is resigning to take the same job in Hudson, Wisconsin. His last day with the City of Cloquet will be Sept. 5. Reeves said he and his wife made the move north from the Rochester area two years ago with plans to stay in the area, but her job changed about nine months ago and Reeves started searching for a job closer to the metro area, as she flies a lot for work now. "I waited as long as I could before getting too...

  • Former chief's complaint 'not substantiated'

    Jana Peterson|Aug 2, 2019

The most recent complaint filed by former Cloquet police chief Wade Lamirande - alleging that a photograph of four uniformed police officers posing with former Cloquet mayor Dave Hallback was a violation of policy - was not sustained. According to a letter from Commander Carey Ferrell, who is acting chief of police, when an investigation discloses insufficient evidence to sustain the complaint or fully exonerate the member, it is classified as "not sustained." "Although your complaint against...

  • National Night Out events set for Tuesday

    Jana Peterson|Aug 2, 2019

While National Night Out started in 1984 as a way to bring neighborhoods and local law enforcement together under positive circumstances, in Cloquet it’s about bringing the entire community and police together. Either way, the idea is the same: helping neighbors meet, improving relations and making an experience less traumatic when police and citizens meet under more urgent circumstances. The Cloquet police department will hold its fifth annual National Night Out community event 5-8 p.m. T...

  • Essentia to open Cloquet clinic

    Jana Peterson|Aug 2, 2019

It’s official. Essential Health is planning to open a Cloquet clinic at the site of the Driftwood Motel, opposite Walmart on the frontage road west of Highway 33. “We are expanding our services in Cloquet to meet the health care needs of Essentia Health patients and employees in the area,” said Essentia Health spokesperson Louie St. George. City planner and zoning administrator Al Cottingham confirmed that the plans were public, noting that the health care network submitted plans to the city...

  • Our View: Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel

    Pine Knot News|Aug 2, 2019

8 and 4 o’clock. That’s where they teach young drivers to place their hands on the steering wheel nowadays. Not on the radio knob, not on the armrest, not holding a taco. And especially not on your cellphone. As of yesterday, holding your cellphone in Minnesota while driving is a crime. Sure, it’s a small crime, punishable by a $50 fine (but beware of court surcharges, which can exceed the base fine!). But it’s against the law, and we are grateful. The new law is a no-brainer, of course. Distracted driving is now a leading cause of car acciden...

  • Harry's Gang: Administrator responds to CAT-7 questions

    Pete Radosevich|Aug 2, 2019

Admittedly, I have a vested interest in CAT-7, the local public access television station. I’ve hosted “Harry’s Gang” on that channel for almost 20 years, and I’ve developed close friendships with both its coordinators, the late Jeff Korpi and now Eric Lipponen. CAT-7 is a small part of the city’s responsibilities, but I’m glad outgoing Cloquet city administrator Aaron Reeves took some time to respond to our editorials and stories on CAT-7. Even though he’s planning to leave the city in Septemb...

  • On The Mark: The North Shore is lake source cooling at its finest

    Ann Markusen|Aug 2, 2019

The day after my 73rd birthday, my husband, Rod, and I headed up the North Shore. We fled exhaustion and duties, immersing ourselves in glorious summer. Lake Superior operates like a cooling chamber, cold water mating with sunshine to put zip in the air, disperse biting bugs, and lay a light tan on your shoulders. Daily swims are possible both inland and, if you are brave enough, in Superior. First stop, Tettegouche State Park. If you hike the trail and wooden stairs down to where the Baptism...

  • Letter: Show your support for CAT-7

    Aug 2, 2019

It feels like the outgoing Cloquet city administrator, Aaron Reeves, is doing everything he can to get rid of CAT-7 and its coordinator Eric Lipponen. I worry that the church services, “Harry’s Gang,” various sports and other things that are shown on CAT-7 will be gone. They already haven’t been on the air for ages and it’s not clear why Reeves decided it was his job to change everything about the cable access station since it’s funded entirely by Mediacom. With Reeves leaving Sept. 5, I think any final decision regarding CAT-7 should be t...

  • Letter: Apologies from Ruby's Pantry

    Aug 2, 2019

Our sincere apologies to all our friends who had to wait so long to get a share from our Ruby’s Pantry July 24 distribution. Our truck driver from the North Branch warehouse facility tripped and broke his leg that morning as he was getting ready to leave. It took a new driver almost an hour to get to the warehouse and get on the road. Our volunteers worked as quickly as possible but I realize it was still a long wait for you. Thank you for your patience, and a very special thanks to John from B&B Market for waiting with his forklift in order t...

  • Letter: Iron Range Legislators show support for PolyMet

    Aug 2, 2019

The claims by metro legislators and anti-mining groups about PolyMet Mining are downright fabrications. It is very disappointing that people don’t know or don’t care what our strong rules and regulations require, and that the media continues to perpetuate the misinformation. The people of the Iron Range deserve better. The people of the state of Minnesota deserve better. There is no scandal. The agencies have done their jobs. The letter of the law was followed to a T. Here are the facts: Fact: Our Department of Natural Resources required PolyMe...

  • Carlton Daze is ready, set, run!

    Kerry Rodd|Aug 2, 2019

It was run, run, run during the annual Carlton Daze celebration. The weekend kicked off with children's races and the 27th annual 5K race Friday night, followed the next morning by the Minnesota Voyageur Ultramarathon. On Friday former Esko runner Sean Gaskell blazed his way to an impressive win by running a blistering time of 16:56 on a night with temperatures well into the 80s. The 30-year-old pulled out to the lead early in the race and won handily, while 47-year-old Barry Fischer was second...

    Pine Knot News|Aug 2, 2019

Plenty of fun! Whether you were running a race or running to garage sales or simply running between events in and around Carlton last weekend, there was some kind of fun for everyone during the annual Carlton Daze celebration. Spectators headed to Jay Cooke State Park to check out the Paddlemania competition on the St. Louis River and the Minnesota Voyageur Ultramarathon runners as they passed over the swinging bridge on their 50-mile route to and from Duluth. In Carlton there was softball,...
