  • Boys basketball: Esko blows by Cloquet

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 13, 2019

It didn't take long for the Esko boys basketball team to warm up Friday night in their 89-54 win in Cloquet. The Eskomos got hot right after the opening tip off and before the Lumberjacks could blink, they found themselves in a 20-point hole they were never able to dig out of. "It was something to see," said Cloquet coach Steve Battaglia. "Esko hit seven 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the game and we were down by 20 points before we realized the game had even started. It was... Full story

  • Loss of football program makes Cloquet alum scramble

    Jana Peterson|Dec 13, 2019

News that St. Cloud State University is ending its football program has left at least one Cloquet graduate scrambling over finals week to find a way to keep playing college football. Dylan Lauer, a 2018 Cloquet grad, heard whispers Monday night and Tuesday morning, but dismissed them as rumors until Tuesday afternoon when the news was everywhere. By the team’s 3 p.m. Tuesday meeting with the president, he already knew what was coming. The university said it will eliminate football as well as b...

  • Pine Knot Outdoors: A clearcut rendezvous gone by the wayside

    Bret Baker|Dec 13, 2019

A couple of nagging health issues have kept me out of the whitetail woods and off the newly formed ice. I have to rely on the stories of others or think back to hunts of the past to keep me sane, knowing bucks and bluegills are out cruising. Some of my earliest hunting memories revolve around my brother Bruce taking me under his wing. We covered a lot of ground chasing grouse and woodcock in the fall, and speedy cottontail and snowshoe rabbits in the winter. He took me deer hunting just once. I...

  • DNR briefing

    Dec 13, 2019

News from the Minnesota Department of Natural Recources Jay Cooke getting in winter shape with deep snow Staff at Jay Cooke State Park east of Carlton have been busy after the recent snowfalls. They’ve been able to open up the office, River Inn, Oldenburg and Grand Portage parking lots but there’s now intermittent ice on sidewalks and roads. Due to a muzzleloader deer hunt Dec. 7-13, ski trails have not been groomed. With snow depth and ice on trees, it will take some time to groom beginning Saturday. Skiers are welcome to ski on ungroomed tra...

  • Wrenshall News: Classrooms benefit from nonprofit help

    Anne Dugan|Dec 13, 2019

A reader in Cloquet sent a lovely email about the amazing teachers at Wrenshall school. She is an avid supporter of the nonprofit DonorsChoose (donorschoose.org), which makes it easy for people to help classrooms, teachers and students get the tools and experience they need for a great education. The reader explained, “Teachers submit their projects and the charity arranges delivery after the project is fully funded. I ended up being absolutely obsessed with this charity. Since then, I r...

  • Kettle River tree lighting fosters community spirit

    Lois E. Johnson|Dec 13, 2019

The first tree lighting ceremony in Kettle River on Friday, Dec. 6 was a big success. "Kettle River needed this," said Morgan Yeats, one of the organizers from the Ma and Pa Kettle Days committee in an email several days after the event. "I have been getting great feedback about the tree." The tree lighting was a community event that drew about a hundred people from the city and the surrounding rural area. People pitched in to help bring the 19-foot tree to the city, set it up on a heavy stand,...

  • Carlton news

    Leola Rodd|Dec 13, 2019

The Carlton Holiday Market was wonderful. My sister, Sherry Erickson, and I took our event passports to at least six businesses in Carlton to shop and get stamped for the drawing at the tree lighting ceremony. We started out at the Bethesda Lutheran Church Bazaar, which is always fun with the homemade baked goods, next to new items, and homemade lefse and lunch. Our next stop was The Greenhouse, where we were treated to a pop-up concert by the Madrigals from Cloquet High School. It was great to...
