Jerome "Jerry" Allen Pederson, 78, of Moose Lake, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, at Solvay Hospice House with his family and care team by his side. Jerry was born June 21,1945, in Slayton, Minnesota to Martin and Hilda Pederson. Jerry and his twin sister, Judy, were the youngest of eight siblings. He grew up on a family farm in Westbrook. Darla Jean Swanson, 73, of Cloquet passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. Last week, the Carlton County’s office dismissed two first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges previously filed against Chad Arnold Connor. The reason listed was “prosecutorial discretion.” When contacted, Carlton County Attorney Lauri Ketola declined to discuss Connor’s case specifically. She did, however, talk about the challenge of prosecuting cases that revolve around conduct from years before. “It can be difficult to prove,” said Ketola, who has made prosecuting sexual abuse a priority. My office is in the old Cloquet Co-op building in Esko, and it carries a lot of history. The thing is built solid. Those Finlanders obviously expected the building to be around for a hundred years or more. It’s tight, too, not drafty at all. Darrell Charles "Butch" Swanson, 74, of Barnum passed away with family by his side on Jan. 12, 2024, in Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. A dispute involving a boxcutter between two students at Barnum schools Tuesday led to a short lockdown and an arrest of a 14-year-old girl. The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office reported that it received a call from the district just after 9 a.m. about a student attacking a classmate with a knife. A 16-year-old boy suffered a slight slash wound to his chest. When deputies arrived, school staff had subdued the 14-year-old girl and were taking care of the boy. The Barnum bus drivers continue to struggle with being short-staffed. The ultimate solution would be to hire two additional bus drivers. The district is considering an alternative solution that is concerning the bus drivers and the community. The district is proposing to sell its bus fleet to a private busing company. Most of the current drivers are Barnum graduates and/or have children connecting them to the district. The Wood City Classic boys basketball tournament featured two top local teams. Cromwell-Wright came into the tournament undefeated as one of the area's top Class A teams, while Cloquet entered with a 3-4 record after opening with one of the toughest schedules in the area in Class AAA.
