  • So long, Pine Knot readers

    Edward Schulstrom|Sep 1, 2023

September is here. This means harvest fests, cooler weather and the beginning of school. As I begin my final year at the University of Minnesota Duluth, I will be leaving my internship at the Pine Knot News. It has been an incredible experience, with so many learning opportunities. I was fortunate that I got to attend many fun events as a part of my work here. It was so much fun to be recognized as a member of the Pine Knot, and occasionally people would mention that they had read something I had written. My favorite part was reading the paper...

    Edward Schulstrom|Aug 25, 2023

Autumn Peterson has been a part of the Carlton County Fair for more than half her life. The Wrenshall resident started with poultry and goats at the age of 8; this year she brought only rabbits. The showing process is a combination of skill on the part of the exhibitor, and an assessment of the rabbit's physical qualities. The judge observes the exhibitor's ability to show they have knowledge of the rabbit, and will also compare the rabbit's physical appearance to what is normal for that...

One of the side events to those in town at Carlton Daze is the Paddlemania on the rapids of the St. Louis River, from the Thomson dam to the swinging bridge in Jay Cooke State Park. The water was rough enough to create a few spills and a lot of thrills for those participating on Saturday. There were quiet moments as well, on what turned out to be a perfect weather day by the river....

  • A music album about condiments?

    Edward Schulstrom|Jul 21, 2023

"Now here's a story 'bout Steve Hanson. An Alaskan cowboy that really changed our salad dressin's," sings Xander Ripley-Jaakola in open lyric of his song "Ranch." Only 16 years old, Ripley-Jaakola released his first album last December under the name Xander Muxic. Aptly named "The Condiment Album," the Cloquet teen spent about six months writing and recording the songs, all while juggling high school at Harbor City International School in Duluth. He made the album in his parents' basement,...

The head and the feet make up five sections, where pollinator plants grow. The shell of the turtle is divided into four sections corresponding to the four cardinal directions. • From the Intern: It's good to be here for the summer

    Edward Schulstrom|May 26, 2023

My name is Edward Schulstrom, and I am the new summer intern at the Pine Knot. I have always been a member of the Carlton County community since I was born on my parents' farm in 2003. As a farm kid, milking cows, bailing hay and the Carlton County Fair were usually the highlights of the summer. At the county fair, my family would arrive at the crack of dawn to milk our cows, stay the entire day and only leave after milking again in the evening. When my parents took over Finke’s Berry Farm (...
