  • Community notes: Stay-at-home order extended with exceptions

    Pine Knot News|May 8, 2020

Gov. Tim Walz extended his stay-at-home order through May 18 last week, at the same time making changes that will allow some additional retail stores and other businesses to offer curbside pickup of purchases. Walz estimated his order will put up to 30,000 Minnesotans back to work. Restaurants and bars, as well as salons, barbershops and gyms are still prevented from offering inside services. Also last week, Walz gave the green light to allowing factory and office workers who don’t have customer-facing jobs back into their work spaces, with c...

  • Community notes: Property taxes due May 15

    Pine Knot News|May 8, 2020

Property taxes are due May 15, and the fact that the courthouse is open by appointment only means people should probably plan how they will pay, rather than racing to county auditor’s office at the last possible minute only to discover that in-person payments are not being accepted at this time. According to Acting Auditor/Treasurer Kathy Kortuem, people can pay via the following methods: • Mail a check, cashier’s check, or money order to Carlton County Treasurer, PO Box 160, Carlton, MN 55718 • Pay by e-check, debit card, or credit card ei...

  • Out in it: For openers, fish where the fish are

    Bret Baker|May 8, 2020

This week I've been able to get out and chase some pre-spawn crappies, brook trout, and sample the annual sucker run. Most of my focus is on the impending Minnesota walleye opener Saturday. The march of the boats has already begun through Cloquet, mostly headed north. I'm hoping most anglers are sticking close to home, but my gut tells me otherwise. I have decided it's best to avoid crowded boat ramps and fish off the beaten path for the opener this year. My approach will follow a pattern that...

  • Rodd's Ramblings: Trip to shack is a treat

    Kerry Rodd|May 8, 2020

Pandemic or not, there are still some things we can do. Last week I was able to enjoy a short trip to the deer shack, somewhere near Cromwell. It brought a welcome respite from being boxed in and held hostage to the virus. As you might recall, last Saturday was gorgeous, in the high 60s, but a bit breezy. After parking the truck and unloading the ATV, it was time to take the short ride through the woods to the old shack, which had not been visited since last deer season. Taking the side-by-side...

  • Hockey: Familiar faces on the move

    Kerry Rodd|May 8, 2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the sports world across the globe has slowed to a crawl and in some instances seems to have stopped completely. But there is still work to be done in the case of a few former Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjack hockey players. Corey Millen - a two-time Olympian, the third leading scorer in Minnesota Gopher history and an eight-year NHL veteran - is back in the North American Hockey League after a short hiatus. Millen was hired as head coach of the St. Cloud Blizzard...

  • Wrenshall News: Right now, outdoor spaces make for ideal classroom

    Anne Dugan|May 8, 2020

I recently ran across a quote from the writer and thinker Bell Hooks talking about the possibilities a classroom environment offers students: "The academy is not paradise. But learning is a place where paradise can be created." In her book "Teaching to Transgress" she continues: "The classroom, with all its limitations, remains a location of possibility." There has been a lot written about what impact the loss of a deliberate space for learning might mean for students. I teach at the college lev...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|May 8, 2020

Even if our schools are closed, there is some school news to report, as we congratulate Emaleigh Olesiak, who competed in the Minnesota Academy of Science state fair held virtually in March. This was Emaleigh’s first state event, and she won a Silver Award for her project “Air Air Everywhere,” for excellence in STEM research. We also congratulate Katelynne Schatz for being named Employee of the Year at the College of St. Scholastica and also the top student employee of the year in the state...

  • Carlton news

    Leola Rodd|May 8, 2020

Happy Mother’s Day. During this time of social distancing, let us take time to honor moms and to show our appreciation for their continued love and support on Sunday. The first Mother’s Day in the United States was celebrated on May 12, 1908, at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church to honor Anna Jarvis’ mother. Mother’s Day can actually be traced back to the 17th century in England. Mothering Sunday was the fourth Sunday of Lent, and was a special day when rules about fasting and penance...
