In recent columns I’ve talked about my walking prowess and how I have used this time to enjoy outdoor walks with my wife each night. It is well reported that I am not in a rush when I go out for the daily constitutional. But things changed dramatically Monday night when a series of events brought out the old competitive instincts. It nearly did me in. After getting home from work, my wife and I headed out for our walk, and at the beginning things appeared normal. In typical fashion, she was a... Full story
Recently I got a text soliciting some advice about fishing a lake a couple of hours north of Cloquet. Within seconds I responded with a detailed map indicating the wind would blow at 20-plus mph around noon the next day, limiting fishable water. Minutes later I added a couple of screenshots of GPS-marked spots to try for walleyes. It struck me that I rely on a whole toolbox of technology on my smartphone that was nonexistent just a few short years ago. Some are free, several cost money to... Full story

The May 30 event, which usually takes place with 150 to 200 teams on Gull Lake near Brainerd, had a different look...
The first week of June we brought the last of the rutabagas from our root cellar to the Whole Foods Co-op in Duluth. There are a lot of things that power the farm and allow us to provide local organic produce to our community year-round, but arguably one of the most obvious and most important is the sun. We’ve been seeing a lot of the sun these days and, while we could definitely use some rain to balance it all...
I don’t know where my brain has been lately, but I just found out that Father’s Day is June 21, not last Sunday. Oh, well, it means twice the good wishes for all you fathers out there. I also know that there will probably be no class reunions this summer. The Class of 1961 will not gather this year, but members hope to make some bigger plans for the 60th reunion next year. I want to wish all our area classes a great summer, even if you can’t gather for your significant reunions. There doesn...
Cloquet's Washington Elementary School got some positive reinforcement of its own earlier this month, when the Minnesota Department of Education named it a Sustaining Exemplar School for its successful work using Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. Students and parents at Washington don't call it PBIS, though - for them it's "Purple PRIDE." PRIDE stands for having a Positive attitude, being Respectful, Including others and Doing your best Everyday. It is essentially a code of...
