  • With plenty of snow, it's a go for skiers

    Jana Peterson|Dec 30, 2022

Oddly enough, the Lumberjacks' first Nordic ski meet was canceled because of too much snow, not too little, the usual reason early in the season. Despite that hiccup, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton teams competed in two meets entering the Christmas break, and are looking forward to hosting the third meet Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Pine Valley. "That one is unique because it takes place in the dark, since our entire trail is lighted," said head coach Tim Stark. "Parents don't have to take off work, so there te...

  • Rodd's ramblings: How the sports sausage is made

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 30, 2022

Usually this column has something to do with sports. However, I thought this week I’d explain what type of effort goes into getting a newspaper out to the public each week. Well, maybe not the entire newspaper, but at least my part of the sports section. Before I begin, I also would like to share that this year marked my 20th year of writing about local sports. It all started at the Pine Knot in the winter of 2001. Through the years there have been many ups and downs, but it has always been inte...

  • Cloquet tournament goes on the clock

    Tyler Korby|Dec 30, 2022

The Wood City Classic in Cloquet is as traditional as a holiday basketball tournament gets, featuring a warm welcome, picture-perfect venue and action-packed slate of games. And a shot clock, too. In yet another rendition of the annual event at the Cloquet Middle School, the eight teams, both boys and girls, agreed to experiment with the 35-second clock in the invitational, one year prior to shot clocks being mandatory for all prep games statewide in Minnesota. "I think it's cool," said Cloquet...

  • Tradition holds at Esko tourney

    Tyler Korby|Dec 30, 2022

Buzzing around in her yellow Esko girls basketball sweater Tuesday, Sue Northey greeted fans with hugs as they entered the school, made time for an interview, and eventually coached her Eskomos to victory on Day 1 of the 42nd annual Coaches Classic holiday basketball tournament at Esko High School. Northey, who spent 18 years at the Eskomos' helm before returning this winter after 14 seasons away, thoroughly enjoys the event in honor of the late Jack Johnson and sponsored by the Esko Sports...

  • Kettle River news

    Marcia Sarvela|Dec 30, 2022

The next city council meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kettle River Senior Center. Plan to attend this meeting. Quilting at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is 9 a.m. to noon every Wednesday. How the world is changing is not really for the best. When I was a child growing up, most everything came in glass jars or tin cans. Things like cream cheese and dried beef came in 4-ounce juice glasses. I still have some of those glasses today. Olives and jelly and peanut butter came in larger glasses. If something came in quart jars, the glass was made...

  • Wright/Cromwell News

    Jennie Hanson|Dec 30, 2022

Our sincere sympathies to the family of Karee Hansen Rowell on her tragic death on Dec. 18 in Bullhead City, Arizona. Funeral arrangements are unknown at this time. According to the Mohave Valley Daily News, three people died following an apparent murder-suicide late Sunday, Dec. 18, at a Bullhead City home. Police said Timothy Wayne Albright, 64, of Cromwell killed his fiancée, Karee Pauline (Hansen) Rowell, 64, and her cousin, Trisha Lynn Wallin, 58, who lived in Bullhead City. He then shot himself, authorities said. Rowell and Wallin lived...
