  • Native plant sale is a win-win-win

    Jana Peterson|Jun 25, 2021

Every summer, Molly Henrick and her kids collect monarch eggs near their rural Blackhoof home and take care of them until they grow into butterflies. Henrick figures they release about 500 butterflies a year. So when she heard about the native plant kits and seed mixes being sold through Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District, and found out there was a set specifically for pollinators, she jumped at the opportunity. "I don't think people realize the chances of those eggs making it to...

  • Wrenshall news: Summer has taken hold

    Anne Dugan|Jun 25, 2021

This past weekend we planned a pizza party to celebrate many colliding holidays. There were birthdays, Father's Day, and the summer solstice. But the biggest celebration was for the inch of rain that fell on the farm. While we're probably back to irrigating at the end of this week, it was a welcome drink of water for all the organisms that make this acreage home. One crop that seems unfazed by the unpredictable weather conditions is rhubarb. A healthy fistful of stalks was sent in our first...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jun 25, 2021

The Little Red School House at the Carlton County Fairgrounds in Barnum needs painting. The fair board and retired educators, who are at the building during the fair, are asking for your help. Maybe there’s a sports team or youth group that can step up and volunteer for this job. Just call Lindsay at the fair for more information at 218-389-6737. The fair will furnish the paint and supplies. Yoga will meet 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday, June 28 at the Cromwell Pavilion. Gear provided. Questions, c...

  • Cloquet boys still basking

    Steve Korby|Jun 25, 2021

There were police car sirens and flashing lights, celebratory posters, gratified parents, grandparents, friends, school officials plus local television and newspaper reporters at the Cloquet Country Club on Thursday. All were there to welcome home the Minnesota High School League State Boys Class AA golf champions: the Cloquet Lumberjacks. As the school van came to a halt and the doors opened, a crowd erupted into cheers at the sight of the Cloquet golfers and coaches emerging from the van,...

  • Barnum takes swing at tourney

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 25, 2021

Very quietly, the Barnum golf program is putting the town on the map. The little town sitting between Cloquet and Moose Lake has produced boys and girls basketball championships and has been at the top in softball numerous times, but in eight of the 10 years of the program, it has produced caliber players who went on to play in the Minnesota Class A state tournament. This season, Delaney Kocher went to state for the second time. “Delaney was our most senior returning player this year,” said coa...

  • Glints of glory at state meet

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 25, 2021

Last week's Minnesota State Class A boys and girls track meet yielded a few surprises in the weight events for both boys and girls, two of those by area athletes. In the boys discus event, Esko's Gage Stankiewicz was a heavy favorite to take the title, but notice was served by South Ridge's Deekon Anvid in sectionals. Anvid narrowly missed beating Stankiewicz, who had recorded the longest throws in the state this season. In the state meet, Stewartville's Will Tschetter and Anvid both surprised,...

  • Finding silver linings after crushing injury

    Lydia Stone|Jun 25, 2021

Ilei Benson was sprinting down a soccer field this spring, headed toward the goal. Then she felt a painful pop. Her knee hyperextended. It buckled beneath her. "Then I'm on the ground," Benson said. Within the knee are six ligaments. In falling during a summer league soccer game against Maple Grove, Benson injured four of them. The injury brought an exceptional track season to a screeching halt for Benson, who had broken the Cloquet High School pole vault record of 9 feet, 7 inches with a vault...

  • Cloquet runners medal

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 25, 2021

The Cloquet boys and girls track teams were dominant throughout the regular track season, winning by a large margin at many track meets this spring. But when the Section 7AA meet was held, only two athletes from Cloquet qualified for the state meet: Olivia Jameson and Nathan Genereau. Both athletes had exceptional days as Jameson took third in the high jump and Genereau was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. “I am just so proud of both of those kids,” said Cloquet track coach Tim Prosen. “Th...
