  • Rodd's Ramblings: Some things remain the same

    Kerry Rodd|Jul 2, 2021

Well, it’s been a little over a year since my walking articles hit this column. Little did I know that the back-to-back columns would be a foreshadowing of a health problem a couple of weeks later. Last Friday was the 1-year anniversary of my quadruple bypass surgery, and things have changed. Following surgery, I started following a stricter diet and managed to shed 55 pounds. I also focused on eliminating stress and accomplishing things that had eluded me in my previous 63 years of life. No. 1...

  • Of course it went in, he called this hole-in-one

    Pine Knot News|Jul 2, 2021

Cloquet's Kim Meisner hit a hole-in-one at the Rugged Spruce golf course in Mahtowa on June 9. Meisner used a six-iron on the 134-yard No. 6. "I called it," Meisner said, adding that it's something he says. "Here comes my first hole-in-one" is what he shouts when feeling optimistic on a par 3, and he did it on that hole. "It's been 50 years in the making," Meisner said. His dad and two of his brothers already have hole-in-one boasting rights. Meisner's accomplishment was witnessed by Holly...

  • County runners shine at Grandma's races

    Pine Knot News|Jul 2, 2021

After a year’s hiatus due to the pandemic, Grandma’s Marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon returned to Canal Park in Duluth on June 19. While many things changed, some things remained the same. Cloquet and Carlton County had a number of runners who were impressive in both races. The top performance of the day belonged to 1974 Cloquet graduate Brent Smith. Smith ran the marathon in 3:02:11, setting a new record for the 65-to-69-year-old age group. Smith not only set the record in the age group, but was so dominant that his next nea...

  • Wrenshall News: Honeyberries hit market

    Anne Dugan|Jul 2, 2021

Local Wrenshall farmer Jason Amundson describes the taste of the honeyberry as what would happen if a blueberry fell in love with a pack of SweeTARTS: some are sweet, some are sour, some are tart, and they are all ripening faster than they ever have before. "In 2019 we knew reliably that we could count on the berries to be ripe on the Fourth of July," he said. "Last year we opened for picking on June 30. This year it was June 25. It's terrifying." I spoke to Jason and his wife and farming...

  • Carlton News

    Leola Rodd|Jul 2, 2021

Happy Independence Day. I hope folks will celebrate safely with family and friends now that most of the pandemic restrictions have been lifted. About three weeks ago, I had the opportunity to have a get-together with family and friends to celebrate my 75th birthday and even enjoy a visit from my son and daughter-in-law from California. We ate a lot of food, took family pictures and played some lawn games, including molkky — a gift from the Lance Seboe family. Molkky, aka finska, is a popular F...

  • Octogenarian looking to reunite

    Pine Knot News|Jul 2, 2021

Graduates from the Cloquet High School classes of 1953, 1954 and 1955 will gather at The River Inn later this month. In addition to Facebook and other means, 1954 CHS grad Wendell "Windy" Falstrom placed a small ad in the Pine Knot News to let people know about the event. I connected with Fahlstrom at his home in Napa, California. These graduates are in their 80s and it's just a thrill for Windy to come back to Cloquet and rejoin his former classmates. "Once a person moves away and then reflects...

  • Health care workers honored in Cloquet parade

    Jul 2, 2021

The unanimous selection for this year’s grand marshals of the July Fourth parade is a group of people who worked hard and risked much over the past 18 months: health care workers. “All health care workers, from those in nursing homes and school settings to clinics and hospitals, public health nurses and more, deserve our thanks for taking care of us during the pandemic,” committee members said in a joint statement. “We hope everyone who is watching the parade Sunday will make them feel special — and reach out to thank the many who can’t be ther...
