    Playing at home last Thursday on a perfect day for soccer, the Cloquet girls team stayed undefeated by slipping past Duluth East 3-2. With temperatures in the mid-60s and a partly cloudy sky, and with the field in great shape, the setting was perfect, minus the fans in the stands due to pandemic restrictions.     Athletes who played for Cloquet, Barnum, Proctor, and the University of Minnesota Duluth are likely to tell you they've never forgotten fiery redheaded coach and teacher Jerry Erickson. He was my former coach and I recently caught up with him in his retirement from teaching and coaching. He grew up in Poplar in northwest Wisconsin, a baseball haven.     Coming off a win in Hermantown a week earlier, the Cloquet boys cross country team came in atop a three-team triangular meet at their home course in Cloquet Thursday afternoon. Junior Harmony Tracy won the girls meet for the Lumberjacks, but as a team the girls couldn't quite catch the speedy Duluth East Greyhounds.     The Esko girls soccer team fell to 2-2 on the season on Thursday night with a tough 2-1 road loss in Grand Rapids. After falling behind 2-0 in the first half the Eskomos rallied in the second half, but the clock expired and the Thunderhawks managed to preserve the win. The Thunderhawks were the beneficiary of two goals by Abbey Birkey in the first half. Birkey’s first goal came just a minute into the game with the second at the 21-minute mark.     The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls tennis team traveled to Superior to take on the Spartans on Monday, and the Lumberjacks came away with an impressive 6-1 win. Marina Dostal got things started for CEC at No. 1 singles by downing Superior’s Jillian Reville 4-6, 6-4 and 6-0. CEC added a win at No. 3 singles when Addie Loeb defeated Brooke Herdry 6-2, 6-2.     Spruce grouse hunters in northern Minnesota’s boreal forests are being asked to voluntarily submit feather samples for a genetics research project being conducted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in partnership with the University of Minnesota.
