  • Esko baseball keeps winning with its power game

    Kerry Rodd|May 27, 2022

Sporting a roster that includes only one senior, one might expect a rebuilding year for the Esko baseball team. Instead, the Eskomos are 14-3 and are currently fighting for the top seed in Section 7AA along with another AA perennial power, Duluth Marshall. "Any given game we might start as many as four or five juniors and the same number of sophomores," said Esko coach Ben Haugen. "We have two classes of kids who have played a lot of baseball. I am a little surprised at how we've done so far,...

The win was a sweet one for the Lumberjacks, as the Vikings are the defending Section 7AAA champs. Head coach Tyler Korby called it a "statement win." "The girls executed our philosophy really well. We like to play small ball and run and put pressure on teams," Korby said. "We have some kids who can really book; they just kept...

  • Wren's Nest: Summer events heat up in Wrenshall

    Annie Dugan|May 27, 2022

Over the last week I found a deer tick, a blacklegged tick, and a wood tick, all in very uncomfortable proximity to my body. After hearing from an area resident who contracted Lyme disease, I am adding my voice to others’ (including singer Brad Paisley) to encourage nightly tick checks. In doing some research on best repellents, it seems that products with picaridin are rated the highest and are also safe to use on bare skin. We’ve found that making sure our animals are up to date on tick repellent medication also helps keeps the bugs to a low...

Have you ever seen coins lying on a headstone? Leaving a coin lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed. This tradition became popular in the United States during the Vietnam War as a way,...
