  • State Champs

    Steve Korby|Jun 18, 2021

In what will go down in state golf history as one of the most memorable, dramatic individual finishes in high school play, Sam Baker won the Class AA State Boys Golf Championship Wednesday. Add to all of that, the Cloquet boys team won it all as well. Baker beat Beck Erholtz of Staples-Motley by one stroke. They traded the lead back and forth over the last few holes before Baker birdied two of the last three holes to emerge on top at the Ridges at Sand Creek golf course in Jordan. Baker's group... Full story

  • Court affirms Line 3 approvals based on oil demand

    Dan Kraker-MPR News|Jun 18, 2021

The Minnesota Court of Appeals handed a major victory to Enbridge Energy this week, affirming state utility regulators’ approval of the Canadian company’s Line 3 oil pipeline replacement project. A three-judge panel ruled 2 to 1 that there is substantial evidence to support the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission’s approval of the project. The PUC approved a certificate of need for the Line 3 project twice — in 2018, and again last year. The commission also granted the project a route permit, along a different route than the current Line 3....

  • City will study franchise fees to fund roads

    Jana Peterson|Jun 18, 2021

Cloquet city councilors gave the go-ahead to city staff Tuesday to look into charging franchise fees to utility companies as a way to raise money to pay for street and infrastructure improvements. City administrator Tim Peterson reminded the council that they decided to hold off on the fees during the pandemic because a lot of people were struggling financially. “We have zero dollars going towards street and utility infrastructure projects moving past this year,” Peterson told the council. “Fran...

  • A Senior Day

    Jana Peterson|Jun 18, 2021

On Tuesday, Cloquet set aside time to celebrate its senior citizens with free treats and prizes, music, food, shopping, shared knowledge and a glorious day at the park. Nearly 40 different vendors set up awnings and tables at Veterans Park. They shared information about services available to older residents, senior health care and living options, employment, beauty tips, entertainment and even local reading materials such as the Senior Reporter magazine edited by Cloquet resident Burton Laine... Full story

  • Board sets annual budget for next year

    Mike Creger|Jun 18, 2021

While it’s never an exact science when setting a budget nearly three months before students enter buildings for a new school year, the Cloquet school board approved numbers it was presented with at its regular meeting Monday night. The total operating cost for the 2021-2022 year was estimated at $38.7 million, slightly under proposed revenues. That leaves the district fund balance at $9.2 million, about $86,000 more than the previous budget year. The only eye-opener in the numbers is the projected $385,262 hit to the general fund balance. S...

  • Budget approved despite mysteries

    Jana Peterson|Jun 18, 2021

Esko school board members approved a budget Monday for the next school year that superintendent Aaron Fischer referred to as somewhat “mythical.” That’s because the budget was created without knowledge of three critical indicators: how much the state is allocating to the school district, final results of contract negotiations with employees, and student count, which Fischer said they usually don’t know for certain until September. “We had to put in some assumptions because our legislato...

  • Officials celebrate start of waterline

    Jana Peterson|Jun 18, 2021

After two decades of effort, Twin Lakes Township will get its waterline, with clean healthy water and plenty of it. Local officials, waterline constructors and political dignitaries gathered June 10 outside the Four Seasons events center in Carlton for speeches and an official groundbreaking. "Wow, it's really happening," said Twin Lakes Township chair Diane Felde-Finke, admitting that she got a little choked up when she was practicing her speech at home before the ceremony. The state...

  • Apartment fire injures one; safety issues arise

    Jana Peterson|Jun 18, 2021

A fire Sunday morning at Larson Commons senior apartments in Cloquet left one woman with severe injuries and her apartment damaged. It also raised questions about what would happen in case of a bigger fire. According to the Cloquet Area Fire District, a call came in around 9:30 a.m. June 13 about a fire inside an apartment with a possible trapped victim. Upon arrival, fire crews forced entry into the apartment and found the residence full of smoke with zero visibility. Crews found and removed...

  • Marathon will snarl traffic

    Pine Knot News|Jun 18, 2021

This weekend’s Grandma’s Marathon events will cause delays for traffic headed to Duluth and the North Shore. On Saturday an Interstate 35 and Highway 61 detour is in place in Duluth to accommodate the morning marathon. The traditional detour route through downtown is under construction this year. Adjustments to the detour required to avoid the construction are going to result in longer delays than normal. Those heading to Duluth over the weekend can expect long delays. Plan ahead and consider alternate routes or using navigation apps to avo...

  • Our View: Let the fireworks soar after year off

    Pine Knot News|Jun 18, 2021

As we predicted at the end of 2020, this year we’ll celebrate the Fourth of July as a normal event with a parade, sporting activities, and fireworks. Well, almost normal. Uncertainty of the pandemic’s effects by midsummer have affected planning for the annual event, and lingering pandemic restrictions have limited the group gathering size and scope. Unfortunately, another side effect is the economic fallout from the pandemic has made it difficult to raise enough money for the fireworks display. There will still be the parade down Cloquet Ave... Full story

  • Harry's Gang: Body cameras provide truth that can't be varnished over

    Pete Radosevich|Jun 18, 2021

A picture is worth a thousand words, it's said, and I agree. This article is about more than half that, and there's no way I can adequately explain how beautiful my mother is, even if you read to the end. But if you look at her picture here, you'll know whether I'm full of natural pride or if my mother is not beautiful at all. You can see for yourself. In the criminal justice system, we didn't always have that option. Until recently, the testimony or report of law enforcement officers was all... Full story

  • Letter to the editor: Watch how things are defined in St. Paul

    Pine Knot News|Jun 18, 2021

While watching Minnesota’s legislative committee and floor sessions, some debate arose in my mind about the discussions. One surrounded small businesses. As legislators are drafting legislation, it is important for the public to know what the “small business” definition is. In an email exchange with a house member, the member was reluctant to relay the exact definition. It’s important to know who lawmakers are talking about because it affects a large percent of Minnesota businesses. It all means various businesses were eligible for federal...

  • Letter to the editor: Events are back, enjoy them

    Pine Knot News|Jun 18, 2021

I find it interesting, and maybe fun, to reflect on just what the world is like now, after the heart of the pandemic seems to be over and daily life gets back on track. With pandemic restrictions easing, hopefully we can return to enjoying the events that we missed during the past year. Most are open to the public. Many offer complimentary food, beverages, sweet treats, information, trinkets, samples and door prizes. I think it’s interesting to see what one tiny microbe can do to put a stop to so many events. I welcome the return of Fourth o...

  • Food Sources: Cooking with love and melding tradition

    Emily Swanson|Jun 18, 2021

When you watch good cooks in action, all their senses are engaged. They are tuned into how the sauce feels against the spoon, whether the vegetables are glistening as they are sauteed, how the bread sounds when the baking crust is tapped, what the sweet, sour, salty, savory, bitter tastes need to stand out or blend. Many languages describe what cooks are searching for. The Japanese call it "umami," which means the "essence of deliciousness." I like the deeper meaning expressed by the Arabic word... Full story

  • Genereau stands alone for boys

    Jana Peterson|Jun 18, 2021

Cloquet Nathan "Paddy" Genereau has a very particular pre-race ritual. He pounds his chest: three times on the left, two on the right, two on the left, two on the right. Then he jumps up and down twice. And then the race goes by in a blur of adrenaline, with a dose of cheering thrown in. Such was the case Saturday, when Genereau took first place in the Section 7AA boys 300-meter hurdles, earning himself a ticket to the Class AA state meet this Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.... Full story

  • It's a trifecta sweep for Jameson

    Lydia Stone|Jun 18, 2021

Although most athletes hope to make it to the Minnesota track and field state tournament in just one event, Olivia Jameson managed to earn a spot in three during last week's girls Section 7AA championship meet in Cloquet. With heavy competition from southern schools such as Andover and Forest Lake, the Cloquet junior swept her events with a win in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, and triple jump at the section meet June 9. She will be the only Cloquet girl competing at the 2021 Minnesota track... Full story
