    Former Cloquet-Esko-Carlton hockey player Westin Michaud is hoping a move west will give him a chance to realize his dream of playing in the NHL. After playing professionally for the Manitoba Moose last season, the 2014 Cloquet graduate has signed a contract to play for the Stockton Heat - a minor league affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames.     In a stormy bout between the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton and Duluth East boys soccer teams last Thursday, the Lumberjacks were left with a 1-0 loss and an early exit as the weather prevented a full second half. CEC head coach John Sundquist felt his team got unlucky when it came to which half of the field they defended first. "That 30 mph wind was like an added player for them," he said.     After two section titles in a row, the Cloquet girls soccer team remains a favorite for a three-peat in Section 7. Last week the Lumberjacks split a pair of games, beating Hibbing 8-0 Tuesday, then losing Saturday 2-0 to Two Rivers (formerly Henry Sibley). Playing at home in the pouring rain on Monday, they defeated Duluth Denfeld 3-2 to improve to 7-2 on the season. Coach Dustin Randall sees room for improvement.   • Details of interstate project coming

    The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hosting a virtual public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28 to discuss work along northbound Interstate 35 at Barnum in 2022. The project may include a detour due to closure of the northbound exit ramp into town. The meeting will include a presentation and time for questions.
