With deep sadness, William "Bill" Francis Schroeder, 81, of Scanlon passed away Sept. 29, 2022. He was born April 27, 1941, in Cloquet, the son of Francis and Grace (Bashterash) Schroeder. Bill was a 1959 graduate of Cloquet High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 through 1964. He was employed with Northwest Paper/Potlatch Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 2001 as foreman superintendent. Glen Chester Gillette of Supply, North Carolina, passed into Heaven unexpectedly at his home on Sept. 29, 2022. Glen was named after his father, Jason Glen, and his uncle Chester, his mother's brother. From birth, he was called "Chet," until he joined the U.S. Air Force and went by "Glen." Jan Steven Salo, 75, of Wrenshall passed away Oct. 2, 2022, at Edgewood Vista in Hermantown. Jan was born Aug. 13, 1947, to Leo and Aune (Tervo) Salo in Superior, Wisconsin. He grew up in Florida. Carlton County Public Health and Human Services will be offering two drive-through vaccination clinics in October. In addition to the new Covid-19 vaccine booster shot, the county will offer a standard flu shot for ages 6 months and older, and a high-dose flu shot for ages 65 and older, as well as a FluMist shot as long as supplies last. The St. Louis County board voted to prohibit new cervid farms in the county in an effort to prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease, effective immediately. The unanimous vote updated the county’s zoning ordinance to allow existing cervid farms to continue to operate, while prohibiting expansion of those existing farms. When can a person dress up for Halloween with hundreds of other people of all ages to run a 5-kilometer race through Cloquet? During the annual Pumpkin Run and Walk, that’s when. Hosted and organized by Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, this year’s event is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. The 5K (3.1-mile) race will begin and end on campus. State officials planned to start sending checks Oct. 5 to more than 1 million pandemic frontline workers in industries including food service, education, health care, long-term care, and first responders. For those headed up to the North Shore to take in the fall colors, there is travel news. North Shore Scenic Drive, also known as County Highway 61, will close for emergency repairs beginning Tuesday, Oct. 11. Erosion on the lake side of the highway is causing the slope to fail. Law enforcement found a missing 18-year-old inmate from the Northeast Regional Correctional Center in Saginaw, Minnesota. NERCC staff had called 911 to report Kristofer Ryan Orr unaccounted for at approximately 11:40 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7. Orr was apprehended without incident at 8:03 p.m. near the area of the Bachelor Road and Esker Trail in Grand Lake Township after receiving a citizen tip. Cloquet detectives and officers arrested a 43-year-old Cloquet man Friday afternoon after an extensive investigation regarding a home invasion June 7 on Boulder Drive in Cloquet. According to a news release from the police department, during the June home invasion, a woman was awoken after an intruder entered the home and began strangling the woman as she slept. Martha Jeanette Kesti of Esko passed away Oct. 6, 2022, surrounded by family on her 95th birthday. She was born in Aitkin on Oct. 6, 1927, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Swenson) Strom. She was a 1944 graduate of Superior Central High School. Martha was united in marriage to Matt Kesti on May 15, 1948, in Cloquet.
