The battle for the Brown Jug between the Carlton and Wrenshall girls basketball teams is always a fun night. The atmosphere is loud and raucous, and the intensity is always at a fever pitch. That's exactly the way things played out Monday when the Bulldogs pulled out a 52-47 win over the Wrens in Carlton. "It really doesn't matter what the records for each team are, or whether they are having a good season or a season where they are struggling," said Carlton coach Brian Hey. "It's the game... Croix Kochendorfer stopped all 31 shots Saturday night in leading the Chippewa Steel to a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Wilderness. It was the first game of 2022 for the Steel (17-15-1) as the team returned after a three-week break. The team showed little rust in the early moments as it jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period when Sam Frandina beat Wilderness goaltender Konrad Kausch on a power-play goal 4:26 into the frame. That goal was followed by Ryan Remick’s tally with 3:23 remaining when he converted on a 2-on-1 on a feed from B... Full story
Until last Thursday, the last time the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team played at home was Dec. 14. During that span the Lumberjacks went 0-5-1. When they finally got a chance to play in the friendly confines of Northwood's Credit Union Arena, they didn't disappoint the hometown crowd with a 3-2 win over Brainerd. "It felt like it has been forever since we played at home," said CEC coach Shea Walters. "We have had a tough stretch on the road so it felt really good to get back in our barn in... Full story
A tenacious defense and a key first-half run were just enough to give the Cloquet girls basketball team a narrow 66-61 victory over Esko in Cloquet last Thursday night. "We pride ourselves on playing a tough man-to-man," said Cloquet coach Heather Young. "We work hard on positioning but need to improve on constant communication. To cause Esko to turn it over 20 times along with the ability to get 11 steals is a nice stat to see. Esko is a well-coached team. They shoot the ball well, transition a... Full story
Aidan Ripp wasn't the only Cloquet athlete competing at Lake Placid last month - his younger sister, Charlotte, was hot on his heels. It was a cold, cold day - even at 1 p.m. - minus 8 degrees with modest winds. The chalet at Pine Valley was crowded with kids and parents. The Cloquet Ski Club's Jenny Barta ably led us through the outdoor practices to come, ensuring skis needing wax had received it. Based on parents' prior feedback, she divided us into groups with two volunteer adults leading five to seven kids each. Some parents joined in too. No one seemed to mind the cold: the snow apparel was impressive and appropriate.... Full story
At a recent Carlton County Board of Commissioners meeting, one member asked the audience, “What do farmers actually do in the winter?” While I was initially a taken aback by the question — being married to a farmer I see firsthand the amount of work that goes into running an operation — I decided that I should treat the query as curiosity rather than dismiss it as woeful ignorance. In our household, my husband cuts back to about 50 or 60 hours a week versus the 80 he spends during the growing...

Cloquet lost one of its most charismatic and dedicated residents Saturday, when 81-year-old Dave Johnson died unexpectedly at home. Although Johnson was born and raised here, he was very much a citizen of the world. With his beloved Rosa at his side, Johnson had one foot in Minnesota and the other in Italy. Italy was Rosa's birthplace, the place the couple met when Johnson was stationed at Aviano Air Base there. Theirs was a grand romance, with obstacles to overcome and great joys as well. Rosa...
