  • 'Beauty' of a story plays in Cloquet

    Jana Peterson|Nov 19, 2021

The Cloquet High School fall musical has returned, and it is a spectacle. In the Disney version of "Beauty and the Beast," wondrous human teapots, clocks, dressers, candlesticks and more come to life on the stage, dazzling audience members and startling the "only human" characters in the show. The set is also remarkable: creator and handyman Rich Brummer has outdone himself, hanging three massive antlered creatures (that he shot out West) on a Tudor-style tavern wall, and crafting a castle... Full story

  • Community Thanksgiving meals return

    Jana Peterson|Nov 19, 2021

This year's community Thanksgiving dinner will be a hybrid affair, on what will be the second Covid turkey day. The Carlton County Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and Auxiliary will again offer free Thanksgiving meals on Thursday, Nov. 25, this year via pickup, delivery or in person. Last year there were no sit-down meals available. "We'll have all three options," said organizer and DAV treasurer Raffy Johnson. "As for Covid restrictions, we're just gonna follow CDC guidelines. If you're... Full story

  • Covid comes knocking

    Mike Creger|Nov 19, 2021

Monday’s Wrenshall school board meeting began with a palpable moment of silence. Superintendent Kim Belcastro said the family of board member Alice Kloepke reported she had taken a turn for the worse in a battle with Covid-19 and was in an intensive care unit in the Twin Cities area. Hours earlier, Wrenshall resident Shelly Kilby posted a dire report on her husband Steve. “They needed to intubate Steve. It was a tough decision for him. They have called the six surrounding states to try and find a critical care unit for him. He received a tra... Full story

  • Weekly radio reporters

    Pine Knot News|Nov 19, 2021

Mystery solved, and by a subscriber at that. Del Prevost is the lone male in the two pictures printed last week that we received from the Carlton County Historical Society. He said Cloquet High School students once went to the WKLK radio station to provide a weekly report on what was happening in the Cloquet school system. Various students would go to the station each week, Prevost said. He can be found in the picture at right with fellow senior Sue Mylander Peterson in January of 1968. The...

    Pine Knot News staff|Nov 19, 2021

A booming drum ceremony filled the meeting room at Cloquet city hall Tuesday as the city council and mayor acknowledged National Native American Heritage Month. Council member Lyz Jaakola, who represents Ward 5, which overlaps part of the Fond du Lac reservation, said it's constructive to have a month to encourage reflection on indigenous people, although the community thinks about its culture and issues every day of the year. She said she's encouraged by "hopeful discussions" across the...

  • COVID disconnect? As cases climbed, Minnesotans dropped their guard, officials say

    Peter Cox|Nov 19, 2021

A year ago, almost all of Chey Eisenman’s car service customers wore masks. “We were at almost 100 percent of people — regardless of how they felt about COVID or masks — were wearing them,” she said. “And that was fascinating to me. And then as people got vaccinated, those masks came off really fast.” Eisenman runs a luxury car service called Chey Car. She said mask-wearing ebbed and flowed during the summer months, and jumped up again in late July when cases started to rise again, but she said that’s dropped off in recent months to aroun... Full story

  • Our View

    Pine Knot News|Nov 19, 2021

Thumbs up to our local veterans groups and their auxiliaries. Not only did they serve our country, many continue that tradition of service here at home. On Veterans Day, they offered food to fellow military veterans free of charge, and next week the DAV will serve Thanksgiving dinner to anyone who wants it, also free of charge. Veterans serving in the various Honor Guard groups around the county offer time and comfort through ritual for grieving families. They lead our parades, and they lead by example. Americans who have forgotten what it is... Full story

  • Harry's Gang: With a will, there's a way to be OK at end of life

    Pete Radosevich|Nov 19, 2021

One of the questions I get most from clients is, “How do I avoid probate?” I can understand why they are so concerned — probate is an expensive process, but with careful planning, it can usually be avoided altogether. The other big concern is, “I don’t want the government to take my house if I have to go into the nursing home.” The facts are, most people don’t end up in a nursing home, and when they do, it’s most often for a short period of time (three to five weeks, to recover from an ailment... Full story

  • On The Mark: A reflection on small towns and urban neighborhoods

    Ann Markusen|Nov 19, 2021

After 12 years of living full-time in Red Clover Township, I’m beginning to understand the power of local ties and community. Growing up in an inner-ring Minneapolis suburb, we lived in a house cheek-to-jowl with other post-World War II single-family homes. All were recently built on post-WWII prosperity, expanded educational opportunities and federally subsidized home mortgage loans. My parents both graduated from the University of Minnesota in the late 1930s, then tuition-free, and each lived... Full story

  • Letter to the editor: Celebrating the flag, again

    Pine Knot News|Nov 19, 2021

After reading Jana Peterson’s column “Let’s return to one American flag for all” in the Oct. 29 Pine Knot, I want to say “thank you” for writing so well what has been on my mind lately. The last four or more years have been so full of flags — often not representing events or ideas I support — that I felt negativity when seeing the American flag. Lately, I’ve been thinking about why that is and how I could somehow take back the flag for myself. I really don’t want whatever action I take to be just another move that causes more division. I wa... Full story

That's what Arntson recalls hearing from Stankiewicz... Full story

  • CEC pool season ends on a fast note

    Jana Peterson|Nov 19, 2021

The Lumberjacks girls swim team wrapped up its season Saturday with a 7A Section meet that was both amazing and disappointing, according to head coach Rachel Peterson. It was amazing because so many girls set new personal records Saturday, and disappointing because that wasn't good enough to advance any of them to this week's state meet, as Grand Rapids dominated the meet at Lincoln Park Middle School in Duluth. New to the section this year, the Thunderhawks won Saturday's section meet by a... Full story
